Europe’s grid is ready, now it’s time for green gas!

At the EBA conference in Brussels, Gas Infrastructure Europe shared an encouraging message: the network is already there.

Biomethane market

At the recent European Biogas Association (EBA) conference in Brussels, Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) shared an encouraging message:

Europe already has the network to make biomethane a key part of the energy transition.

Here’s why that matters:

Tick button Ready-made infrastructure – Europe’s existing gas grid could transport up to 100 bcm of biomethane by 2040, without major upgrades.

Tick button Affordable transition – Reaching that goal would require around €2.5 billion per year, nearly ten times less than expanding the electricity grid for the same energy output.

Tick button Practical and fast – By using what we already have, Europe can decarbonize faster, avoid delays, and make renewable gas part of everyday energy.

Of course, challenges remain: inconsistent standards, complex cross-border trade, and outdated regulation still slow things down. What’s needed now is clearer policy and stronger collaboration to unlock biomethane’s full potential. At bGX, that’s exactly what we’re working toward — connecting producers, partners, and consumers across Europe to make the Green Gas Generation a reality.
